Love was out of reach until he claimed his son and the boy’s bewitching caretaker.

After a disastrous love affair, Lord Gilleasbuig was content living a life outside of London’s spotlight until a series of accidents threatened to leave his estate without an heir. Lucky for him, he had a son he could claim and protect.

After all, how difficult could it be to fetch his estranged son from an orphanage with too many children to care for?

Except, the breathtaking Miss Sadie Fields, who had cared for the child since birth, was a force to be reckoned with. She was furious at Gill for shirking his duties but he was irresistibly drawn to her fire.

Determined to prove himself a good father and win Sadie’s trust, Gill offered her a chance to continue watching over her charge. When she agreed, Gill was eager to return to his boring secluded life, but danger continued to shadow him.

Sharing The Love

with J. Arlene Culiner

Featuring her novel A Room in Blake’s Folly

Welcome back to Sharing The Love, J. Arlene Culiner! And congratulations on your new release! Tell us about it.

I love writing about people who are different. Some are forced to adapt to new circumstances in order to survive, others are originals, folks who have never really fit into mainstream society. But no one is humdrum, and all have dreams.

So what do an embittered mail-order bride, an adventurer, a brothel madam, a silver baron/artist, a war refugee, a pacifist, a playboy veterinarian, and a woman who protects spiders all have in common? They get another chance to find love. And what better setting for romance than a semi-ghost town in Nevada?

About the Book

If only the walls could speak…

In one hundred and fifty years, Blake’s Folly, a silver boomtown notorious for its brothels, scarlet ladies, silver barons, speakeasies, and divorce ranches, has become a semi-ghost town. Although the old Mizpah Saloon is still in business, its upper floor is sheathed in dust. But in a room at a long corridor’s end, an adventurer, a beautiful dance girl, and a rejected wife were once caught in a love triangle, and their secret has touched three generations.

Excerpt

Lance saw the woman doubled over in the dirt road, her legs bent backward and to each side of her in what looked to be an exceedingly painful position. Had she been hit by a car? Probably not: few enough cars passed this way. She might have had an attack of some sort. He loped toward her, thinking only of rescue and alleviating pain, because that’s what a veterinarian’s job is all about, and humans happen to be animals, too.

He was less than ten feet away, when she raised her head and glared at him with fury. The look, as toxic as a poison arrow, halted him in his tracks. She certainly didn’t look as though she needed his help. She didn’t look as though she’d ever need anyone’s help.

“Um…I’m sorry. I saw you down there, in the road, and I thought…”

He saw her fury seep away, transform into visible regret. “You chased it away.”

            “Right.”

Swinging her bent legs into a more reasonable position, she stood up without using her hands. For someone who wasn’t young, she looked to be in perfect shape. Or at least she had maintained an admirable flexibility.

He knew who she was, all right. Who else had a long bushy ponytail of silvery hair? Who else had three dogs trailing after her—three dogs now sitting calmly in the shade of the abandoned laundry and watching him, wary-eyed. They knew he was one of the vets who gave them shots every year, and that meant he was no real friend.

The woman in front of him, what was her name? Lucy something…oh yes, Lucy Barnes, and she worked in Rose Badger’s vintage clothing shop whenever Rose roared off to Reno. For the first time, he noticed the camera.

“Look, I thought you had fallen or…”

“Yes, I realize that’s what you thought.” She didn’t look as though she were about to forgive him for it either.

            “You were taking a photo?”

            “Yup.”

            “Of what?”

            “A Xysticus.”

            “A what?

“Oh, sorry. A ground crab spider.”

            “Of a ground crab spider?”

She relented slightly. “They’re called crab spiders because they look and move like crabs.”

“Yes,” he said dryly. “I think I’ve worked that one out.”

            “Right.”

“What for? Why were you taking a photo?”

“Because I like them. I like macro photography, I like taking photos of spiders, and this particular spider was very pretty.”

            “Pretty. Got it.”

She looked annoyed again. “Veterinarians don’t consider arachnids worthy of notice?”

“Did I just tell you that?” he said a little too defensively because she was right: he never noticed them. Okay, he never killed them either, because he knew how useful they were, but that was as far as things went. “What was particularly pretty about that one? I mean spiders look like spiders to me. I never thought aesthetics came into it.”

            “Really?” She even looked surprised.

“Really.” Inwardly, he sighed, regretting his attempt to maintain chatty conversation. It was always the same when you dealt with nuts, cranks, and fanatics: they couldn’t understand how normal people functioned.

“Most crab spiders are brown-beige so they can blend into their surroundings and catch prey easily. They do have splotches though, and this one had a nice leaf marking on its opisthosoma.” She smirked. “Sorry, that’s the posterior part of the body. The front part is the—”

            “Prosoma,” he interrupted.

The smirk faded and, wordlessly, she stared at him.

It was his turn to be haughty. “Since you know I’m a veterinarian, you’ll probably accept that, in this century, we do go to school. And while we’re there, we manage to study a little science.”

            “Sorry,” she said contritely.

“That’s all right.” He tried not to look too self-satisfied.

Review of A Room in Blake’s Folly

Rich detail and scintillating dialogue transport the reader through the decades between 1889 and 2022 of this surprising saga. With flowing descriptive phrases (“… the walls had a yellowish hue that only time could bring,”) Culiner effectively intertwines the characters and descendants of Blake’s Folly. And although overhunting and pollution mean environmental change, the charm of this old world community remains intact. Cheers for this book!

Sharing The Love

A Silver Daggers Tour Post

with Jana Richards

Featuring her series The Masonville Series

Welcome to Sharing The Love, Jana Richards!

Let’s leap straight into an excerpt from Book 1, Child of Mine

Excerpt

“We asked you to come here this evening because we have something we want to tell all of you. Lauren and I are getting married.”

The room went deathly quiet. Lauren tightened her grip on his hand. Her face turned pale as she stared at her family’s stunned expressions. Cole put his arm around her waist, afraid she might faint.

He needn’t have worried. She lifted her chin at a defiant angle and turned to face the others.

“Cole and I have decided this child needs the best possible start in life and that means having a mother and a father. We’ve always been friends, so what better way to start a marriage then with friendship?”

Garrett pushed himself to his feet and came forward. “I think it’s a hell of an idea. You two will make wonderful parents.”

He enfolded Lauren in an embrace. Cole heard her murmur her thanks to her brother. “I think you’ll make a wonderful uncle.”

Charlotte was next in line. She kissed Lauren’s cheek. “I’m so happy for you, sweetie. When’s the big day?”

“In a couple of weeks,” Cole said. “As soon as we can arrange everything.”

Lauren’s parents, Robert and Grace, also extended their congratulations. If they had reservations, they kept them to themselves.

Only his mother remained in her seat, staring at them in disbelief. Cole sat next to her. “What do you want to say, Ma?”

“You can’t replace Billy.” She choked out the words.

“I know that.” He’d known he was second best in her eyes all his life. “I wouldn’t even try.”

“But to marry his wife, to raise his child? It’s wrong. They don’t belong to you. You always wanted what belonged to your brother.”

He wanted to shout at her that the baby was his, that it had nothing to do with Billy. And Lauren was his, too. He’d loved her first. His brother had never appreciated what a gem he’d had in her. He’d squandered his marriage the way he’d squandered the love that had been lavished on him all his life, from his parents, from Lauren, and even from him.

Instead he pressed his lips together and said nothing. He felt a hand on his shoulder, and saw that Lauren stood beside him.

“I know this is difficult for you, Ella. I know you’re grieving. But I have to raise my child in the best way I know how. Aside from my brother and sister, Cole is my best friend in the world. He’s a good man, and I know he’ll be a wonderful father. You should be very proud of him.”

His mother stared at Lauren as if she couldn’t believe what she was saying. Her face twisted. “Don’t you miss Billy at all? Don’t you grieve for him? Nobody understands. Nobody.”

“Ma.”

He said the word a little sharper then he’d intended, but at least it got her attention. She looked up at him in surprise.

“I’m sorry if it hurts you, but Lauren and I are getting married. We care about one another and we care about the baby. The three of us are going to be a family. I wish you could be happy for us.”

Ella dabbed at her eyes with a tissue. Finally, with a shuddering breath, she turned to look at him.

“For Billy’s baby’s sake, I’ll try.”

Billy’s baby.

The pain was swift and unexpected. If she’d stabbed him through the heart with a dagger it wouldn’t have hurt as much.

When Jana Richards read her first romance novel, she immediately knew two things: she had to commit the stories running through her head to paper, and they had to end with a happily ever after. She also knew she’d found what she was meant to do. Since then she’s never met a romance genre she didn’t like. She writes contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and historical romance set in World War Two, in lengths ranging from short story to full length novel. Just for fun, she throws in generous helpings of humor, and the occasional dash of the paranormal. Her paranormal romantic suspense “Seeing Things” was a 2008 EPPIE finalist.

In her life away from writing, Jana is an accountant/admin assistant, a mother to two grown daughters, and a wife to her husband Warren. She enjoys golf, yoga, movies, concerts, travel and reading, not necessarily in that order. She and her husband live in Winnipeg, Canada. She loves to hear from readers and can be reached through her website at www.janarichards.com

Sharing The Love

with Lisabet Sarai

Featuring her novel Incognito (and information about a Giveaway!)

Welcome back to Sharing The Love, Lisabet Sarai! I’m excited to hear all about your new release!

Not for the Faint of Heart

I don’t like “reader’s advisories”, especially when they detail every sexual activity included in a novel. Erotica is not about sex acts, but about desire and its fulfillment.

On the other hand, I don’t want to offend any readers who pick up my new release Incognito without a clear understanding that it contains taboo content.

I’m willing to admit, some people might be shocked by this book. Both Miranda and Mark are polymorphously perverse characters, attracted to both their own and the opposite sex. They’re natural switches, drawn to roles on both sides of the BDSM power equation. The book includes pretty much every variety of sexual encounter, from incest fantasies to age play to cross-dressing. I’m sure that some readers would dismiss the book as nothing but gratuitous sex. That’s not how I see it, though. Incognito is, first and foremost, the story of one woman’s journey to realize and express her sexuality. Miranda’s heart-crushing initiation into sex leaves her emotionally scarred, unable to reconcile the experiences of love and lust. She’s ultimately healed by her relationship with Mark, a man who’s open and accepting of all her desires – even the most extreme.

About The Book

During the day, Miranda Cahill works diligently on her doctoral thesis. At night, she has sex with strangers.

Public coupling, multiple partners, age play, spankings, bondage, lesbian lust—each salacious adventure exposes new dimensions of her depravity. Her secret life explodes when she realizes her masked partner at a kink club and the charismatic colleague courting her are in fact the same man.

Dickens scholar Mark Anderson seems like an affable, uncomplicated Midwesterner, but he has hidden depths, myriad talents, and an unlimited appetite for erotic variety. With Mark as her guide,  Miranda comes to accept the intricacy of her own desires, as well as to trust her heart.

Reader Advisory: This novel is an erotic romance featuring a committed relationship and culminating in a wedding. Nevertheless, the main characters participate in a wide range of taboo sexual activities, both together and separately.

Genre: Taboo contemporary erotic romance, BDSM/Ménage/Multiple partners/lesbian/gay

Length: Approximately 87,000 words, 293 pages

Rating/Heat Level: Explicit. Mature Audiences Only. 5 Flames.

Excerpt:

A knock on her office door brought Miranda back to the here and now. She had been lost, uncharacteristically, in the manuscript, a classic piece from the collection of the British Museum. There were no annotations, no commentary, on the photocopied pages. Her laptop, neglected, had turned itself off to save power. She sighed and shook her head as if to clear away the lascivious images.

“Come in,” she called, wondering who it could be. She often worked on Saturdays, precisely because the department was deserted and she could read and write undisturbed.

The grizzled head of Harold Scofield poked through the door. “Hello, Miranda. I am sorry to intrude, but I have someone to whom I would like to introduce you.” Miranda smiled to herself; her genial thesis advisor always sounded like a grammar textbook. The gray-bearded figure in suspenders bustled in, followed by an attractive young man in dark-framed eyeglasses.

“Miranda, I would like to present Mark Anderson, our new lecturer. Mark will be handling the Dickens course for the summer session.”

“Mark, this is Miranda Cahill, my most promising graduate student.” Miranda blushed, and Dr. Scofield’s eyes twinkled. “Miranda has chosen a rather controversial topic for her thesis, a new interpretation of the corpus of Victorian erotica.”

The newcomer’s polite smile expanded to a grin. “Really. That’s fascinating. Sounds far more—stimulating—than my dissertation on the metaphorical significance of orphans in Dickens and his contemporaries.”

Miranda’s blush deepened as she noted the double entendre. She met his teasing gaze, almost defiantly. “Yes, it is an intriguing topic, and I believe one of considerable literary and social significance, as well.” He had thick, dark hair, slightly tousled. His eyes behind the glasses were velvety brown with glints of gold. In his face, she saw intelligence, energy, and humor.

“Miranda has championed an unusual theory, that the explosion of sexually-oriented writing during the latter half of the nineteenth century was a reflection of actual practices, rather than a reaction against repressive public morals.” Her advisor appeared to be enjoying the role of agent provocateur. “She believes that the detailed accounts of sexual adventure and aberration published during the era chronicled real experiences, not merely fantasies.”

“Hmm.” Their bespectacled companion looked both amused and interested. “What evidence do you have to support this proposition?”

“Well, to begin with,” said Miranda, automatically adopting an academic tone, “a significant fraction of these writings are first person accounts. And a surprising number are related from a woman’s perspective. If this were primarily a literature of fantasy and titillation, I would expect a male point-of-view to dominate, as it does in modern pornography.” Miranda was encouraged to see that her audience listened attentively and gave due consideration to her points.

“Secondly, these tales are full of real-world details and commentary that would be superfluous and even distracting in fictional erotica. The protagonists discuss social issues such as poverty, child abuse, oppression of the lower classes, things that can only detract from a work intended as escapist fantasy. Even a hack pornographer knows better than to mention the unpleasant or the mundane, illegitimate pregnancies, unpaid bills, rising damp. Yet references to such items are common in the corpus.

“Finally, I find in many of these writings a thoughtfulness that conflicts with the conventions of the pornographic genre. The narrators are engaged in a wide variety of sexual activities, which are described in vivid and provocative detail. At the same time, in many cases, they reflect on their own desires and behaviors, sometimes justifying themselves in the face of the official morality, sometimes castigating themselves for weakness and sinfulness. Either way, there is a psychological depth that would be redundant in fictional erotica.”

“So, what you are saying,” interposed Mark with a grin, “is that a fictional character would simply go ahead and bugger his maid, whereas an individual writing a clandestine diary would spend some time and effort wondering why he wanted to bugger his maid, before he got around to actually doing it?”

Sharing The Love

with Christina Lynn Lambert

Featuring her novel Bear’s Dream: Haven Forest Resort Book 1

Welcome to Sharing The Love, Christina Lynn Lambert!

Have you ever been mistaken for someone famous?

Never. When I’m dressed up nicely, I usually get told I look like a librarian. I prefer T shirts, jeans, and boots. I have perfected the “don’t bother me” expression and typically get left alone to go on about my merry way.

What animal would you chose to be?

I would be a leopard so I could run fast, jump, and climb trees.

What is your favourite strange food combination?

I love to dip French fries in chocolate milkshakes. Also, I put ranch dressing on pizza and pretty much everything else.

You have to sing karaoke, what song do you pick?

Touch of Gray by the Grateful Dead. It’s been one of my favorite songs since I was in high school.

Does music inspire your writing at all?

Yes, definitely. Sometimes a song really describes the mood of a scene and I write it into the story. I listen to music often when I write. The sound helps me focus.

During a disastrous assignment with Shifters United, AJ uncovers some information that changes everything. Keeping the secret from Ellie is killing him but he might lose her forever if he tells her the truth.

When Ellie ends up at the heart of a reporter’s plot to prove the existence of shifters, she and AJ must fight their way to freedom. The survival of shifters everywhere depends on it.

Genre: Paranormal Romance, Steamy, Suspenseful Romance

Length: Novel

Excerpt:

AJ held on to the door, shocked, nearly certain Ellie could be his mate, and there was nothing he could do about it because when she left Willow Hill, she’d be lost to him, forever.

“Bye, Ellie. Take care.”

“You, too.” Her sad brown eyes shone with a hint of tears but held no promise of a possible future for them.

“If you ever need me”—he cleared his throat— “I mean, if you ever need anything, you have my number.”

She nodded and closed her car door. He wanted to exist in some alternate reality where the reason for Ellie’s sadness was because they were both going their separate ways, and the only way to fix the tears threatening to spill from her eyes would be to sit down in the car next to her. They could spend the whole ride back to her house talking like they had before about music and career plans and favorite foods. But in this reality, Ellie didn’t want him. She’d made a mistake in the heat of the moment, kissing him. He knew she regretted the kiss, even if she was kind enough not to say it out loud. He watched her leave the parking deck and drive out of sight. Forgetting her was going to be impossible

About The Author

Before I had the wild idea to write a book, I worked in a few different fields. I was in sales for a while, and after I finished college, I worked as a case manager. When my children were little, I was a personal trainer and running coach. During the evenings, when I was supposed to be studying for another fitness training certification, I started writing a story. Finally, I gave in and acknowledged that writing is what I’m meant to do. I love creating imperfect but determined characters who find the courage to love and the strength to survive in a world where there are no guarantees. My stories include a fair amount of sarcasm, suspense, steam, and violence. When I’m not writing, I enjoy spending time outside and finding ways to avoid cooking. I live in beautiful Virginia with my husband, two daughters, a sweet, hairy monster of a dog, and two devious cats.

Sharing The Love

with J.L. Regen

Featuring her novel Secret Desires

Welcome to Sharing The Love, J.L. Regen!

If you could time travel, where would you go and when? Why?

I’d go to Italy in 1940 so I could see all of the work that my uncle, a medic, did to help soldiers mend to fight the good fight. He was my role model of what a man should be. He never talked about the “war “years.

How many languages can you speak?

I’m fluent in Spanish and French and can get by in German. I have a smattering of Japanese.

What was the last song you listened to?

Toyland. I became so nostalgic for my darling mother who has passed on. She made my childhood years special. I disagree that once you’ve reached its borders, you can never return again. You can see it through the eyes of little ones, as I do with my first and second graders.

What animal would you choose to be?

A thoroughbred horse. I ride when I have time. They are the noblest animal on earth.

If you’ve ever met a celebrity, describe that encounter.

It was the late Tony Randall. He was charming and funny and down to earth.

What was the first book that made you cry?

Charlotte’s Web. I was devastated as a child when Charlotte died. As an adult, I realize that it was so a new cycle of life could be born. Still, I wanted her to live.

About The Book

A Contemporary Romance From The Heart

Nothing in Margo Simmons’s life comes easy. She can’t claim the inheritance on a condo apartment her uncle has left to her until she is gainfully employed in a job for a year. She meets the man of her dreams but anguishes over a loving relationship because he is still emotionally tied to his deceased wife. With great difficulty, she becomes the guardian to a recently orphaned child she had been tutoring.   Margo evolves from an insecure, newbie elementary teacher into a woman determined to fulfill the secret desires locked in her heart.

This story speaks to anyone who has suffered a loss and had to start over.

Genre: Contemporary romance

Length: Novel

Excerpt:

MARGO SIMMONS GRIPPED THE EDGES of the leather chair, waiting for details from the family lawyer about her Uncle Harry’s death. She hoped it would be shorter and less painful than the reading of her father’s will.

An older gentleman extended his hand. “I’m sorry your mother couldn’t be here.”

Margo looked up from her reflections to acknowledge him. “Thanks, Mr. Steinberg.”

“You’ve grown into a lovely young woman.”

Margo blinked back tears at memories of good times shared with Uncle Harry. “Not so young. I’m twenty-three.”

The portly man squeezed himself into a swivel chair and peered at her over wire-rimmed bifocals. “I’m ancient compared to that number.”

Margo gripped her knees to steady her nerves. “My mother wanted to come with me, but they’re downsizing at her dress shop. She was afraid to leave early. My stepfather is furious because Uncle Harry didn’t leave him any money.”

Mr. Steinberg saddened at the sorrowful expression on the young woman’s face. “It pains me to hear Jerry hasn’t changed his ways. However, since you’re the only one present to hear your uncle’s will, I’ll get to the point. Harry has left you his Riverside Drive condominium apartment and the sum of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.”

Margo jumped up from the chair and hugged the man. “This is a miracle. I can’t wait to tell my Mom. She’s wanted me to get out on my own. Now I can. Though I wish it hadn’t come with the loss of my uncle. I adored him.”

The attorney pushed bifocals up his fleshy nose. “I know you did, my dear. He spoke of you often, with fondness. As to your inheritance, in today’s market two hundred and fifty thousand dollars won’t last long unless invested wisely.”

The only thing Margo knew about investments was she didn’t have enough money to make any. “Mr. Steinberg, can you refer me to someone who can advise

me so I make wise investments?”

He raised his hand. “Not so fast my dear. Your uncle stipulated that you be gainfully employed for a year before you can claim your inheritance. The last time your mother and I spoke, you were studying to be a French teacher.”

Margo stared at the vibrant red dragon design on an Oriental rug and thought of the threadbare one under her rickety dining room table. Her eyes darted from the lawyer’s monogrammed attaché case to her worn shoulder strap bag.

She swallowed a lump of pride. “I’ve been looking for a teaching job for two years, but I’m on the substitute list and have a part-time job at a dry cleaner so I’m employed. I know it’s not a professional job, but it’s respectable work.”

Mr. Steinberg made notes in her uncle’s folder. “I’m afraid that won’t do, my dear. Harry loved you but was very clear on the type of employment.”

A tear rolled down Margo’s cheek. “I don’t know how much longer I can live at home. Mama is working twice as hard since Jerry was laid off from his job at the newspaper. He couldn’t get the hang of technology. He’s been on disability from an old back injury. Could I speak to an investment counsellor to get an idea of what to do with my inheritance? It would give me something to strive for.”

Margo sat on her hands as she waited for the lawyer’s response.

Sharing The Love

with Melverna McFarlane

Featuring her novel Inevitable

Welcome to Sharing The Love, Melverna McFarlane!

If you were a potato, what way would you like to be cooked?

I would be twice cooked. First, mashed with garlic, cream, and butter. Second, deep fried in duck fat. This way represents my complicated nature, crispy on the outside while soft and melt on your tongue on the inside.

What animal would you chose to be?

My favorite animal has always been the tiger, fierce and independent, but with a playful streak when you get me in the right mood.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up along the East Coast of America: New York, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Delaware. When people hear that, their first question was if my family was in the military, but that wasn’t the case. We emigrated to America and my parents went where the opportunities were. I spent the majority of my life in Philadelphia and it still holds a warm place in my heart.

What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?

I am a pantser, meaning I don’t know what I am writing until I begin to write. The most preparation I do is to figure out an outline of my main characters’ back stories, then I’ll research as I go. The main exception to this is when I have to write about cultures that aren’t my own. I take my time to understand what may be considered negative and positive stereotypes so I don’t include them in my work, while still being respectful to the culture that inspired my story.

How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?

I have three unpublished books that will be published by next year, and I am about to start on a Christmas novella for this October. I am pushing myself to see how much I can write within a year because the story ideas never stop.

About The Book

They ended on the floor, Nico’s body suspended above hers. His caresses branded her with an invisible “Mine” everywhere he touched, and she reveled in his claiming.

Nico

Four years ago, I made one mistake, and she left. I couldn’t convince her to stay no matter how much I loved her. Still love her. But one day she turns up at my door asking for my protection. A rival family is threatening her life and the business she busted her ass for. No matter what unresolved issues lie between us, the heartache I’ve carried, or the dreams I wish were reality, I won’t let anyone threaten her or the family I had always wanted to be mine. I will always protect her. But I am more than just a temporary bodyguard. I have a second chance to show her my love is worth fighting for, and I will claim her completely. With this new chance, she can’t escape the inevitable.

René

Asking Nico for help is the last thing I want to do. After breaking up with him four years ago, I am not ready to be reminded of all the reasons I fell in love with him, to begin with. Avoiding him becomes impossible when he is still the only man I trust to protect me and my family from a rival mafia boss intent on ruining our lives. His every touch reignites my passions. Though I fight it, and will never admit it, my feelings for my ex had never died. As the heat between us flames to new heights, he tempts me with the possibility of a second chance at love.

Please Note: Both Inescapable and Inevitable can be read as standalone novels in the expanding Oliveri Mafia series

Genre: Contemporary romance

Tropes: Alpha Hero, Diverse, Plus-Size Main Character, Forced Proximity, Bodyguard, Interracial, Second Chance, Mafia

Length: Novel

Excerpt:

“You’ve got this,” René told herself. She straightened her posture, and faced the door she had walked out of three years ago with no intention of ever returning. “It’s not like I am crawling back. If it weren’t for Onika I wouldn’t even be here right now.”

Although René was a first-generation American and had lived in the states her entire life, her family was big, loud, close, and international. With her childhood summer vacations spent in Jamaica, she and Onika, who had only moved to Felicidad two years ago, might as well have been twins. They spend almost every day of their breaks together.

Two years ago, René had offered to help Onika get settled, but her stubborn-ass cousin rejected her offer. Now René was a target with few options.

It was too late to lament her current circumstances, her business was at stake.

Okay, her life and Onikas were also at stake which technically was more important.

But damn, René had worked her ass off to become a hairstylist whose growing popularity resulted in two successful salons. She’d spent years renting chairs in other people’s salons while doing hair in her parents’ extension. Nights, weekends, and friendships were sacrificed on the altar of her dream. Finally, success had started trickling into her life. And now there was a threat to everything she had poured her soul into building, not to mention her life.

She wanted to curse Onika’s name, but Onika was only part of the equation. Who knew her friendship with Jessie would one day up the stakes to her dilemma?

There she went, hyping herself up when she needed a calm head to deal with that man behind the door. If anyone had gotten her wrapped up in drama she would have bet the bank on him—Nico Donini.

All this time she had avoided his name. In her mind, he was an abstract idea. Because thinking his name brought inevitable memories. Not the rip your heart out memories but the warm, cuddle sessions that plagued her after she’d ended things. They whispered to her of the what-ifs she could never voice.

Desperation had driven her here but it didn’t cancel out Nico as her wisest choice. Who was she fooling? She was not ready to face Nico. She spun to her car once again.

Before her first full step, the voice still haunting her dreams said, “Running again? You haven’t changed, have you?”

Erotic Suspense · Sharing The Love

Sharing More Love

with Lisabet Sarai

Featuring her novel Exposure

Welcome back to Sharing The Love, Lisabet Sarai!

Stretching Myself

My latest release, Exposure, started out as a writing exercise in the Erotica Readers & Writers Association Storytime critique group. I’ve been a member of Storytime, on and off, for more than twenty years. It’s a wonderful community that offers both warm support and practical advice.

Back in 2009, the Storytime moderators used to pose regular theme challenges – invitations to try writing a new topic or in a new genre. It was always fascinating to see how different authors interpreted those invitations. Exposure began as a response to an erotic noir theme.

I’d never produced anything “noir” before, but I had some idea what the sub-genre entailed: urban grittiness, disreputable and world-weary characters, tension, darkness and an oppressive air of suspicion, in which nobody was who they seemed. I decided to stretch myself and give it a try. The result was “Private Dance”, a short story featuring a self-confident stripper, a dubious commission, and a bloody double murder.

The story was really different from anything I’d previously written. I originally thought it was a one-off, but for some reason my main character Stella Xanathakeos wouldn’t let me go. I decided to see if I could turn the story into a novel. The result was Exposure.

It was a rough slog. Writing a mystery was a completely new experience for me. I found the genre to be far more demanding than the BDSM erotic romance that was my stock in trade. In a mystery, every plot detail is critically important. At the same time you need to include a few red herrings to keep things from being too predictable.

Another tricky aspect was that, following the original story, I decided to use first person present tense. That fits well with suspense; your characters don’t know any more than your readers, so both are repeatedly surprised and shocked. However, managing time in a present tense novel takes a lot of care.

If you’re familiar with my other work, you’ll find Exposure something of a departure. It’s steamy but decidedly dark, with an ambiguous ending where Stella really hasn’t made up her mind what she’ll do, or who she wants. Nevertheless, I’m very fond of the book, at least partly because writing it pushed me outside my comfort zone and helped me broaden and deepen my craft.

About The Book

Sex, blood and betrayal: it’s all in a day’s work.

I strip for the fun of it. Don’t let anyone tell you different. It’s not the money. I could make nearly as much working at the mill and keep my clothes on, but then I’d have to suck up to the bosses. Up on stage, I’m the one in charge, and I like it that way.

Tony Pinelli hired me for a private dance. I was determined to give him his money’s worth. I didn’t expect to be caught in the cross-fire of a double murder. When his widow shows up at my door, I know I’m in way over my head. Now I’m everyone’s target. I can’t trust anyone – not even the police detective who was sweet on me in high school. My only chance at survival is to shift through the lies and expose the truth.

Genre: Dark erotic suspense – ambiguous ending

Length: 65,000 words, 218 pages

Rating/Heat Level: Explicit. Mature Audiences Only. 5 Flames.

Excerpt:

The next night I show up at the designated room number, at eight on the dot. I like to be professional. I’ve tried to dress as elegant as I can, in a nice peach linen suit that hugs my curves and makes me look dark and exotic. I’m nervous, though, as nervous as I was that first night I stepped onto the Peacock stage. Taking a deep breath, I rap three times on the door like Mr. Clean told me to do.

I recognize the man at the door immediately. I may be a stripper, but I read the papers. It’s Anthony Pinelli, leading businessman, local power-broker, candidate for mayor. Hey, I was planning on voting for him, in spite of the stories about his mob connections. Nobody’s lily-white these days. From what I’ve read, he seems to have the kind of strength that you need to run this tough town.

I’ve seen his picture lots of times, but in person he’s even more impressive. Big but not fat, with a shock of shiny black hair and bushy eyebrows to match. He has a nice straight nose, lips that look decisive, and dark eyes that seem to go right through me.

But more than his good looks, I’m impressed by the sense of power that he projects. Charisma, I think the word is. He looks me over, those firm lips curve into a warm smile, and I suddenly feel like I’d do anything he asks.

“Please come in, Ms. Xanathakeos,” he says, standing aside so that I can enter the suite. His voice has a round, mellow sound to it. It slides over me.

“Call me, Stella, please.” I look around the fancy suite curiously, noting the modern paintings on the walls, the horseshoe-shaped sofa, the bar set up in the corner. The closed door next to the desk must lead to the bedroom. My heels sink into the thick, plum-colored carpet. I’m afraid that I’ll damage it. Maybe I’ll have to dance barefoot.

“Well, then, Stella, you must call me Tony.” He takes my hand in a kind of old-fashioned way. His touch sends shivers through my body. My nervousness is gone, replaced by a feeling of breathlessness. I won’t have any trouble at all getting turned on enough to dance, that’s for sure.

“Can I offer you some refreshment?” Tony asks, gesturing toward the bar.

“Just water, please.”

He hands me a long-stemmed glass full of carbonated water. I watch the bubbles dancing. It feels as if there are bubbles inside my chest, too.

He pours himself a tall scotch. We sit together for a few minutes on the sofa, not talking, sipping our drinks. I feel flushed and sweaty, as if I’ve already danced for him. His body gives off waves of heat. It’s like I’m lying under a sun lamp. I don’t know what to do next.

Finally, he puts down his drink. “Shall we get started? Let me get a bit more comfortable.” He shrugs off his suit jacket and places it over the desk chair. I gasp as I see that he is wearing a revolver in a shoulder holster. He smiles, just a little, as he removes this and hangs it over the chair on top of the jacket. “I’m a dangerous man, Stella, and I have many enemies. I have to take care of myself.” I nod vaguely. I’m not exactly reassured.

He seats himself back on the sofa. “The stereo is over there,” he says, pointing to a complicated pile of audio equipment next to the bar. Somehow, I figure out how where insert my thumb drive and how to start it playing. I turn to face my audience.

The first bars of the music free me from any anxiety. I fix my eyes on him and begin to move. Graceful. Sensual. I’m extremely turned on, but I want this performance to be classy, not raunchy the way I sometimes am.

The shoes go first. Now I unfasten my jacket, lingering over each button. Building the suspense. I’m wearing regular lingerie, flimsy and feminine, instead of one of my costumes. My breasts are like melons, encased in black lace. No padding or wires on this bra; my nipples are clearly visible, pushing the fabric into sweet little peaks.

Contemporary Romance · Sharing The Love

Sharing The Love

with Robecca Austin

Featuring her novel Wedded by the Billionaire

Welcome to Sharing The Love, Robecca Austin!

You’re on a first date. What’s a deal-breaker that would see you walk away?

Ooh! This is such a good question. I’m a bit spoiled and out of the game not having a first date in over sixteen years.

A deal breaker would be food. More specifically, being made to feel like I have to watch what I order. I’m 5’2 and 115lbs, and man do I love my food.

It is one of the reasons I would never go to a restaurant I couldn’t afford on the first few dates, and I’m always prepared to go Dutch or pay for my food.

If you were a potato, what way would you like to be cooked?

Roasted on a charcoal grill, then stuffed with all my favorite things: sour cream, shredded cheddar cheese, topped with chives, and green onions.

Would you go to space if you knew that you could never come back to earth?

Nope. No thank you. I would run out of food, then clutch my stomach in regret. Or hunger.

Of all the characters you’ve created, who is your favourite and why?

The characters I am currently writing are my favorites. I become so invested in each new story that I can’t help but fall in love with the characters. It is always bitter-sweet when I have to write “the end.”

About The Book

He spent the hottest night…with the wrong woman.

One night with the wrong woman…

Tet controlled his universe, including the women he slept with, and a night of steamy fun was the perfect antidote for the new stress in his life.

But her passionate kisses and gentle caresses unraveled everything he thought he craved.

Now he would stop at nothing to make her his, even using their unbridled passion.

Tangela

They say you should never meet your hero…

The open gate onto his property was an invitation she couldn’t resist. She soon discovered it wasn’t meant for her, but with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, she played out a fantasy she’d never thought would come true.

But fantasies have consequences. And hers had steely gray eyes that demanded more than one passionate night.

Genre: Contemporary romance

Length: Novel

Excerpt:

Tangela Morrison sat behind the wheel of her 2006 gray Honda Civic in front of the estate she intended to visit. Not any estate. This one belonged to Tetsuo McCreath. Major league baseball superstar: Rookie of the Year—if she were in charge, she would change the requirements so he could win this medal every year—award winner, and recipient of the Roberto Clemente award for his sportsmanship, community involvement, and his contribution to his team.

Yes, she was a low-key groupie. But who could blame her? The man was one of Wheelcaster’s star athletes. And the city was proud to claim him. Everything he did was perfect.

Then, he’d disappeared from TV and newspapers for two years because of a badly torn rotator cuff. The withdrawal she experienced from those years was the worst of her life. As a result, she’d fallen into work and spent her spare time assisting her uncle at Wheelcaster Fireflies. Fireflies was her uncle’s poorly performing minor league baseball team. Some days, she wondered about her uncle’s mismanagement and what she’d been thinking when she proposed the little league community program for differently abled children. To her uncle the program meant being in the spotlight or perceived spotlight as a philanthropist, except the community program hadn’t gained the attention he’d hoped for. To her, a little league team presented an opportunity to help those children longing to play but couldn’t afford to, and offering the program under the guidance of an established team should have cut costs. The trick to working with Uncle Simon was using Tetsuo’s experience since he once played on that patch of grass.

Tangela glanced at the steel fence. Then peered through the darkness. A long drive, shielded by tall, aged trees separated her from the home of the man she had lusted after for years.

Now he’d returned to Wheelcaster, intent on buying the Fireflies. And she was about to meet him. The thought of seeing him in person, hearing the sultry molasses in his voice made her hot and wet in places that hadn’t had male attention in forever.

Her body’s inadvertent reaction to him was why she’d pulled over to the side of the road before driving up to the gate.

For as long as she recalled, what she knew of Tetsuo had set the standards for her dating life. She wanted a man with the courage to go after his dreams. And because they were both adopted into their families, she felt a kinship of sorts to him—although his first seven years before becoming a  McCreath didn’t sound very loving. Maybe that was why every eligible man she’d met, especially those born with a silver spoon had fallen short—they lacked the heat in Tet’s eyes; a drive to be part of something bigger than himself. Or perhaps it was that his gaze was all consuming, as if he could devour her with his eyes alone.

Despite her body’s arousal, she wasn’t at his estate to sample the smooth ridges of his biceps under her tongue. Or to ogle his masculine form—as if one night could make up for two years of not seeing him on TV. Those delights would be a bonus.

She flushed.

Tangela was here to make sure that when Tetsuo bought the Wheelcaster Fireflies, he wouldn’t ditch the community program she’d started. If her father ran the team, he would have negotiated to keep the program. But her uncle Simon cared more for money and had not lobbied for her program.

Every child deserved a shot at playing the sport they love. It didn’t matter that they weren’t going to play beyond the team’s special Saturday events. Kids like Gabriel, a ten-year-old boy who showed up every Saturday and didn’t let his wheelchair stop him from playing his favorite position. She couldn’t imagine how disappointed he’d be if the program closed. Tangela gave herself a mental shake. She needed a level head. Nothing would be accomplished if she got worked up two-ways-to-Sunday.
